The Conferring upon him of the DECORATION OF THE RED PRECIOUS STONE WITH COLLAR by the CENTRAL GOVERNMENT OF CHINA on its National Day, 10th October 1939.

-----------
Hail! Our revered Bishop.

Who, though born English, is yet heart and soul Chinese.

Hail! Our wise Teacher and Administrator,

To whom the World is one Family,

Whose distress thou relievest

In ways which evoke universal admiration.

The crisis in the far East found thee

Toiling with redoubled vigour for China’s welfare.

For this the Central Government

Appointed thee its High Adviser.

Thy days and nights were devoted.

With painstaking care, to the public weal.

Again the Authorities showed their appreciation.

For thy yoeman services, thou wast made

Recipient of the most distinguished.

Decoration of the Red Precious Stone.

We therefore rejoice with thee, O Bishop!

May thy influence penetrate

Like the rushing mighty wind,

Into the hearts and minds of men.

We pray for thee, our revered Bishop.

May thy health and vigour, by the grace of God, daily abound.
