Presentation Ceremony of the Framed Rubbing of the “St. Paul’s College” Stone Signage

In the morning of November 24, a ceremony was held at Bishop’s House to present the framed rubbing of the “St. Paul’s College” stone signage.

The Most Revd Andrew Chan, Archbishop and Primate of HKSKH, The Rt Revd Matthias Der, Bishop of the Diocese of Hong Kong Island, The Bishop Emeritus Thomas Soo, Dr. Arnold Cheng, Chairman of the St. Paul’s College Council, Mr. Dennis Yuen, Principal of St. Paul’s College, Mr. Michael Mak, Headmaster of St. Paul’s College Primary School, Dr. Karen Wai-Yin Fong, professional conservator, teachers of St. Paul’s College and our Archives staff attended the presentation ceremony of the “St. Paul’s College” stone signage rubbing.

At the beginning of the ceremony, Principal Yuen thanked Archbishop Chan for his trust and support as well as Dr. Fong, teachers and students of the school and the Archives staff for their efforts in the completion of the project. Then, Prof. Wickeri explained the history of the early school motto“Respect the Lord of Heaven, Love Others as Yourself”(恭敬天主,愛人如己). The Chinese term “天主” is the only surviving use of “天主” by Anglicans in Hong Kong. Dr. Fong also shared the challenges and difficulties she faced during the stone rubbing process this past summer.

The presentation took place in the sitting room of Bishop’s House, where Archbishop Chan received the framed rubbing from Dr. Arnold Cheng. After that, the guests went outside to see the stone signage on the wall and Dr. Fong explained the details of the work. The ceremony was concluded with a moving prayer by Archbishop Chan.
