Visit of HKSKH Religious Education Resource Centre Colleagues to the Bishop’s House Archives

Date: Friday 23 Jun 2017

HKSKH Religious Education Resource Centre held its annual retreat on 23rd June 2017.  One of the sessions of the retreat was to visit the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Bishop’s House Archives.

When tracing back the history, from the 1960s, Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui (the Hong Kong Anglican Church) has been involved in the development of religious education.  The Religious Education Resource Centre (RERC) was established on 29th January, 1978 to serve the goal of Christian nurturing by providing training courses, publishing educational material and supplying audio-visual resources.  The Revd Chan Hin-cheung was appointed the 1st Director of the Centre.  At their early establishment, the Religious Education Resource Centre held its office in the Diocesan Bishop’s Office (which situated in the same place of the present Bishop’s House Archives).

A group of 38 staff and colleagues from the Religious Education Resource Centre, led by its present Director, The Revd Canon Thomas Pang, visited the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Archives on 23rd June 2017 at 11:30 am.  Our Provincial Archivist, Revd Dr. Philip L. Wickeri welcomed the group and briefly introduced them to the history of the Bishop’s House and our archives.  Among the exhibited items, were early publications, periodicals from the Centre or their related materials.  The guests expressed that the visit was very meaningful and of great interest to them.  They not only learned a great deal about the History of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui, but also had an invaluable chance to visit the origin of the Religious Education Resource Centre office.

Our Archives hope that there would be more opportunities in collaboration and exchanges with the Religious Education Resource Centre in future.  We also thanked the Centre for their continuous support to our Archives work, especially in setting up book booth during our past Open Days and in area of books printing and publication.
