2026 Conservation and preservation of books

Date: Tuesday 13 Jan 2026

On January 7 (Wednesday), our archives was grateful to invite Mr. Lai Chun Ying, professional of bookbinding and restoration, and the staff from Fai Gor Workshop which are engaged in book binding in Hong Kong, to repair two rare books — “Exploratory Visit to the Consular Cities of China by the Bishop of Victoria” (1847) andBook of Common Prayer” (1879, 2nd Edition). Throughout the process, Mr. Lai and the team demonstrated their professional craft skills and dedication, which we deeply admire and appreciate.

Conservation and preservation of books demands careful attention and accumulated expertise. Upholding the principle of "repairing the old as it was." Mr Lai and the team selected appropriate materials throughout the process, prioritizing preserving the original appearance of the book in both paper material selection and repairing methods. This is not only a technical operation but also a form of respect for history and culture, enabling the books to regain their "original and natural".

The significance of book conservation and preservation extends far beyond repairing paper and bookbinding, also preserving history and continuing cultural legacy. The repairing of rare books enabled books to be revived and makes us value the importance of tangible memories in maintaining culture.

Once again, we would like to express our gratitude to Mr. Lai and the staff of Far Gor Workshop for their contributions!
