The Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Archives recently received a donation of materials from the late Canon Luke Cheung (1915-2002) for our Archives’ collection and preservation. These include Canon Cheung’s Theological Seminary degree certificates, a letter and handwritten manuscripts, photos, cards, miniature gold, silver crosses, honorary souvenirs, and some personal belongings.

Canon Luke Cheung was from Long Jiang (龍江) in Guangdong. He studied in his hometown in the early years and later graduated from the Anglican Union Theological Seminary. He was ordained by Bishop R.O. Hall as deacon in 1943 and as Priest in 1944. From 1946 to 1950, he served as the vicar of St. Luke's Church in Pak Hoi (北海), in Guangdong and from 1950 to 1952, he served in Hong Kong All Saints’ Church (now known as All Saints' Cathedral) and from 1953 to 1955, as the Vicar of St. Mary's Church. From 1955 to 1958, he went to the Episcopal Theological Seminary in Boston for further study and obtained a master's degree in theology. From 1958 to 1989, he became the vicar of St. Matthew's Church. In 1971, he was appointed as Canon. Canon Cheung retired in 1989 and passed away on February 20, 2002.

Canon Cheung possessed profound cultural knowledge and was proficient in poetry writing. In addition, he was proficient in English and German, so he assisted in the translation work when he worked for the Anglican Press. He had contributed a great deal in publishing, pastoral ministry, liturgical and theological education. His publications included 《基督教聖曆簡釋》(The Brief Explanation of the Christian Holy Calendar), published in 1953 and 《一脈相傳:歷代聖者與聖曆》 (The Legend: Saints and Holy Calendars of the past) published in 2004.

We are grateful to have Canon Cheung’s materials in our Archives.
